Marine plywood, it’s a wonder material used by tradespeople and DIYers all over the world. It’s the go-to material when other types of plywood or timbers just won’t cut it. But what is so great about it? And why would you use it over any other material?

Today, we’ve answered some of the biggest marine plywood FAQs just for you. So, if you’ve ever been left asking yourself questions just like those above, then this post is one for you. Read on and find out everything you need to know about marine plywood.

What is Marine Plywood?

Marine plywood, or marine ply, is a type of plywood that is particularly well suited for wet or humid areas, and is considered to be the best plywood for outdoor applications.

Marine grade plywood is manufactured using durable face and core veneers. Designed to have minimal defects, our marine plywood sheets resist both delamination and fungal attack. This material is especially suited for use in the ship and boat building industries.

What is Marine Plywood Used For?

Because of its properties marine plywood is especially suited to wet or humid conditions. Marine ply is commonly used for:
  • Boat and ship construction: marine plywood is often used for constructing boats and ships, for example in the deck or hull. Often it is sealed to make it fully waterproof for this
  • Dock building: just like it’s use on boats or ships, because of its water resistance, marine ply is ideal for using in dock or pontoon building
  • Kitchens or bathrooms: marine ply is commonly used while building kitchens and bathrooms as this is where materials are most likely to come into contact with moisture
  • Outdoor furniture or structures: marine ply is ideal for building long-lasting outdoor furniture or structures like sheds, pagodas or signs – perfect for your home and garden
  • Anything where the materials need to be exposed to moisture or humid conditions for long periods of time

What is Marine Plywood Made of?

Marine plywood is constructed from layers of wood glued together with a weatherproof and water-resistant adhesive. Because of this, marine plywood is perfect for use in areas with high moisture or humidity.

Is Marine Plywood Waterproof?

Marine plywood is not waterproof but it is water resistant. While it might be made with waterproof glues, the wood itself does not undergo any special treatments. Marine ply can be made waterproof by treating it with sealers like waterproof paint, wood sealer, polyurethane sealer or epoxy.

Is Marine Plywood Strong?

Because of its construction, marine plywood is very strong and can withstand heavy loads. As such, it makes it the perfect material to use in building, whether it’s for outdoor furniture, decking or boats.

Does Marine Plywood Rot?

Marine plywood is rot resistant however, that doesn’t mean that it won’t rot. With persistent exposure to moisture – if it’s fully submerged, for example – marine ply will rot. However, if sealed and treated properly rot can be prevented.

How to Seal Marine Plywood

There are many ways to seal marine plywood to make it waterproof. One of the most common ways is by using epoxy sealer in a three-stage process:
  1. Sand your marine ply: this will make sure you have a prepared surface on which to apply your sealant
  2. Clean your plywood: be sure to remove any dust, dirt or grime which could hinder the sealer bonding
  3. Apply sealant: apply your epoxy sealer – or similar treatment – in line with the product instructions. This will often be in a number of layers to make sure the marine plywood is properly sealed
Note: while this three step process is a good starting point, be sure to do your research or speak to us to understand how you can effectively make your marine plywood waterproof.

Can You Paint Marine Plywood?

You can paint or stain marine plywood just like any other wood. Much like when you seal marine plywood, you’ll want to prepare it by sanding and cleaning it before you begin.

How Long Does Marine Plywood Last?

Marine plywood can last anywhere between 15-25 years depending on the application, quality and exposure. When using marine grade plywood in your projects, ensure that you follow all recommended instructions of installing and sealing to ensure maximum longevity.

Where Can You Buy Marine Plywood?

Marine plywood is available at most hardware shops or timber merchants. Alternatively, you can quickly and easily order it online. We sell marine grade plywood in a range of thicknesses, cut to the size you want and delivered straight to your door.

What Sizes Does Marine Plywood Come In?

Marine plywood comes in various shapes and sizes depending on where you purchase your materials. We offer a choice of thicknesses including 6, 9 12 and 18mm and will cut your marine ply sheet to size with a maximum length of 1220mm and a maximum width of 2440mm.

If you need anything other than a square or rectangle sheet of marine ply, you can also have it cut to shape.

What’s the Cost of Marine Plywood?

The cost of marine plywood can vary depending on the size and cut of your sheet and how much you’re purchasing. Because of its construction and specialised use, marine ply is often more expensive that other timber boards like oriented strand board (OSB).
