Acrylic Mirrors – Why Choose Cut to Size Plastic Mirrors?

Here at The Plastic People, we offer mirrored sheet plastic cut to size or shape.

Our lightweight mirror panels are a safer alternative to glass. That's because our plastic mirror sheeting is shatter proof, mark-resistant and 17x stronger than glass. As a result, they’re the ideal mirrors for wardrobe doors, or for use in public spaces, outdoor areas and are even popular in dance studios, gyms and gardens.

We recommend ordering 5mm thickness for mirrors over 1m. Acrylic is flexible and this can cause distortions in the reflection. Using 5mm thickness for larger mirrors will help to reduce this.

Plastic Mirror Panels Cut To Size For Home Or Garden

If you'd like to create the feeling of a larger garden, a lighter garden or perhaps make a special feature or two – garden mirrors cut to size are perfect.

Our mirrored plastic sheeting can also be used indoors. These light weight mirrors are suitable for a range of applications, especially when a shatter resistant mirror would be suitable. If you need a custom stick on mirror for a wardrobe door or stick on mirrors for bathrooms then an acrylic mirror is a great choice. In the home, they can be used as child safe mirrors for playrooms - and as mentioned above, they’re also common as mirrored panelling in fitness studios.

You can even place an acrylic cut to size mirror inside stables. Horse mirrors are safe alternatives to glass – where a non breakable mirror can provide the animals with that element of comfort and companionship.

How To Fit Acrylic Mirrors

If you are bonding Mirrored Acrylic to wood, brick, plaster and other wall substrates, check out our acrylic mirror adhesive which can be successfully used without any adverse effect on the mirrored acrylic. This adheisve is for indoor use only, if you're putting the mirror outside, please contact us for details of a suitable adhesive.

Another option is to have oversized holes drilled into your acrylic mirror and hold it to the wall with screw fasteners. If you are using screws to fix your mirror, we would recommend a screw hole approximately every 300mm all the way around the material for a secure fit.

Because acrylic mirror is more flexible than glass it must be fitted to a flat surface for a perfect finish. If you are fitting it to a wall which is not flat, or are not sure, it is best to fit it first to something rigid such as three quarter inch plywood to reduce distortion.

Cleaning Acrylic Mirrors

Keeping your mirror panels looking clean and shiny is very straightforward – although there are a few things to bear in mind.

You should always avoid using solvents to clean acrylic. Chemical cleaners can damage the surface of the plastic and do more harm than good – so it’s better to stick to a soft cotton cloth and warm water.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are polycarbonate mirrors suitable for high security environments?

Polycarbonate mirrors are ideal for demanding, high security environments. Our polycarbonate mirrors will not break, melt (if burned) and graffiti wipes off them.

Can acrylic mirror be used in bathrooms?

Yes, acrylic mirror is water resistant and can be used in the bathroom. We recommend silicone sealing around the edges.

Can acrylic mirror be used outside and in the garden?

Yes, acrylic mirror can be used outdoors but please remember that all mirrors can intensify and concentrate sun rays and generate focused heat spots. Care should be taken to avoid positioning in direct sunlight.

Acrylic mirror will weather outdoors over time with changes in temperature and moisture. The mirror will still be attractive and reflective but will have a more weathered appearance.

Can you deliver polycarbonate mirror cut to size?

Yes, we are happy to do so. Please select the size of polycarbonate mirror from our Ordering Menu above and as you checkout you will see a Special Notes box. Simply write in there the size you would like us to cut to. We offer this as a complementary service.

How are polycarbonate mirrors different to acrylic mirrors?

Our polycarbonate mirror is much stronger than acrylic mirror. Indeed, they will not smash and should they get burned they will not melt. They also have UV protection and anti-graffiti properties so graffiti can be simply wiped off with plastic cleaner.

How does acrylic mirror compare to glass?

Acrylic mirror is not as rigid as glass mirror. Acrylic mirror is half the weight of glass and at the same time much stronger. It is also more flexible. Because it is flexible, some visual distortion may occur when it is used. Distortion can be exaggerated when using large pieces. This can be reduced and better visual integrity can be gained by using thicker pieces of acrylic mirror (because it will be less flexible) along with careful and correct installation.

Visual distortion is not a manufacturing fault but an inherent characteristic of the material. For more information about Acrylic mirrors please see this page: Make Mirrored Furniture.

How should acrylic mirror be fitted to a wall or wardrobe door?

For best results make sure the wall or door is completely flat and has no imperfections. If this isn’t possible or you are unsure we suggest the acrylic mirror is first mounted onto a thick MDF sheet. Only use specialist Acrylic Mirror adhesive or mechanically fix your mirror using screws. If you fix with screws, please leave some room in the hole for the acrylic mirror to expand and contract. This can be done by making the hole size slightly bigger than the screw.

How should I clean acrylic?

Acrylic should not be cleaned with chemical cleaners as this will very likely lead to damage. Cleaning acrylic should be with warm soapy water and a soft cotton cloth.

We are impressed with a cleaning product called Vuplex which polishes acrylic to a high shine in minutes, keeping acrylic looking like brand new. It also protects new plastic from scratches and grime and restores plastic which has fine scratches and ingrained grime.

Protective Films

All plastic sheet products will have a Clear, Blue or White protective film on both sides or a combination of all three. This is to protect during transit and needs removing before usage. Sometimes it can be difficult to peel off but use a thumbnail gently on any corner to lift and peel. Alternatively gently wet any corner with a cloth to separate film and peel.

Adhesives & Sealants

When using any adhesives or sealants with your plastic sheet product great care must be taken in ensuring its compatibility. Some products can react adversely and either not bond/seal properly or would cause the acrylic to cloud or become white at the bond line. Refer to our web pages for advice if unsure. Check your sealant/adhesives ‘use by date’ to ensure its still current for best performance in your project.
