What Is OSB Board?

Oriented Strand Board (or OSB) is an engineered wood similar to particle board. It is made using a layer of glue and thin ‘strands’ of wood. The small pieces of wood overlap each other and create a strong and durable material.

OSB Vs OSB3 Boards

OSB3 boards are different to standard OSB boards in that they can be used for structural and load – bearing applications, whereas regular OSB cannot. OSB3 board is therefore considerably more versatile and durable for construction and other uses.

OSB Thickness

We provide OSB in both 11mm and 18mm thicknesses. When choosing which thickness to use in your project, consider how it will be used and whether or not it needs to bear weight. Thicknesses available include: 11mm OSB, 18mm OSB.

If you aren’t sure which thickness is best for you, please get in touch and we will be able to provide some guidance.

OSB Board Cut To Any Size Or Shape

We offer custom cutting for your OSB sheets to save you the hassle of doing it yourself. We can cut your sheets to any size or shape. We can also do custom cutouts, so that when your OSB sheets are delivered to your door you’ll be ready to get started right away.

OSB Uses

OSB has a wide range of uses, including walls, flooring, roofing, decking, furniture packaging and manufacture, sheds, caravan interiors, and more. This strong and economical material is a great stand-in for softwood plywood.

OSB FAQs

Is OSB waterproof?

Like plywood, OSB is somewhat water resistant, but not fully waterproof. If you are looking for a more water resistant material for very damp areas consider our marine plywood.

Is OSB the same as plywood?

While they may seem similar and have similar applications, OSB and plywood are different materials. Plywood does not contain the overlapping chips and flakes that define OSB. OSB tends to be cheaper than plywood and is slightly more flexible.

When choosing between OSB vs plywood, consider what kind of conditions your project will be exposed to, what qualities are important to you, and how long-lasting you need your project to be. If you need help making a choice, just get in touch with our team.

Can you paint OSB board?

Like plywood, painting OSB can be a great way to finish your project. Just ensure that you start with a suitable primer or sealant. It is also important to choose a paint suited to whatever conditions the project will be exposed to. It is important to note that it will be very challenging to get a completely smooth surface with OSB.

Frequently Asked Questions about OSB Board

What can OSB be used for?

OSB Board is a popular choice for DIY projects and home improvement, as it is a versatile construction material that is both cost-effective and sustainable. It is strong and durable, making it ideal for a variety of construction projects including subflooring, roofing, and internal walls.

What are the disadvantages of OSB?

OSB is not moisture-proof and can swell, warp, and lose strength if it gets wet. It can also take longer to dry out than plywood. OSB has a rough, patchwork look that makes it unsuitable for exposed decorative surfaces. Its edges can be easily damaged during transport and installation, and it is heavier than plywood, making it more difficult to install and transport.

What are the advantages of OSB?

Oriented Strand Board (OSB) offers several advantages including high strength and durability at a relatively low cost, versatility for various construction applications, good load-bearing capacity, moisture resistance (depending on grade), ease of working with standard tools, and being more environmentally friendly than plywood as it utilises smaller, faster-growing trees. It is commonly used for sheathing, flooring, and wall construction.

Storage

Whilst every effort is made to ensure your wood products arrive in pristine condition care must be taken on delivery to ensure your products are not damaged and to keep them wrapped until needed in a cool, dry place. We sell MDF, Plywood and OSB which have varying degree of manufacturing treatments including flame and moisture resistance. Whilst these products are resilient, they mustn’t be stored or used outside as the elements would delaminate and perish your item especially if they get wet or affected by frost. Some treated wood products are water resistant, not waterproof.

Adhesives & Sealants

When using any adhesives or sealants with your wood sheet product great care must be taken in ensuring its compatibility. Some products can react adversely and either not bond/seal properly or create a poor finish which isn’t good if its going to be visible. Refer to our web pages for advice if unsure. Check your sealant/adhesives ‘use by date’ to ensure its still current for best performance in your project.

Delivery Damages

You have 14 days from receiving your order to report any visible damages. Please email a photograph of the damage along with your order number and contact details as soon as possible to service@theplasticpeople.co.uk. We'll arrange a refund or replacement for you as soon as we receive this. Please keep your packaging and do not use the damaged goods, so they can be collected and returned to us if necessary.
