Frequently Asked Questions about Acrylic
Can I buy acrylic offcuts?
Our acrylic is sold cut to size, so we can supply exactly what you need. This reduces offcuts, and anything too small to reuse is collected for recycling.
How can I clean acrylic?
Use warm soapy water and a soft cotton cloth. Avoid chemical cleaners as they can damage acrylic. For polishing, we recommend Vuplex, a specialist acrylic cleaner that restores shine and protects from scratches and grime.
How can I cut acrylic sheets?
You can cut acrylic at home yourself. Learn how here.
How can I cut Perspex?
Although routing Perspex is generally the best method, it can also be cut at home. See our guide here.
How do I dispose of acrylic?
Acrylic sheet is classified as group 7 plastic. Most councils do not collect it curbside. The best way to dispose of unwanted acrylic is via your local council household waste and recycling centre.
How does acrylic compare to other plastics in strength?
Polycarbonate is stronger and virtually unbreakable, followed by PET/PETG, then acrylic. Acrylic is around 10 times stronger than glass; polycarbonate is roughly 200 times stronger than glass.
How flexible is acrylic?
Acrylic is relatively flexible compared to glass. Thin sheets bend more easily, but over-flexing can cause cracking. We can bend acrylic for you if required.
How scratch resistant is acrylic?
Acrylic is hard-wearing but can scratch with sharp or abrasive objects. Surface scratches can be removed with a proprietary acrylic scratch remover.
How strong is acrylic?
In impact resistance tests, acrylic is 10–20 times stronger than glass.
Is acrylic better than glass?
Acrylic is 17 times stronger than glass and half its weight. It is safer, easier to lift, and if it breaks, it does not shatter into sharp shards. Acrylic is also clearer and transmits more light than glass.
Is acrylic heat resistant?
Acrylic is heat resistant up to 70°C.
Is acrylic safe for food?
Acrylic is food safe and does not leach toxic chemicals like BPA.
Is acrylic suitable for outdoor use?
Yes, acrylic can be used outdoors.
Is clear acrylic suitable for secondary glazing?
Yes. Benefits include improved thermal and sound insulation, extra security, light weight for easy installation, and minimal impact on light transmission.
What are the advantages of acrylic over glass?
- Extremely clear (92% visible light transmission vs 80–90% for glass)
- Less reflective than glass, no discolouration with thickness
- Scratches can be polished out
- Breaks into large, blunt pieces rather than sharp shards
- 20% more efficient at reducing temperature flux
What are the benefits of acrylic splashbacks?
- Versatile: cut to shape, accommodates sockets and wall bends
- Durable: strong and high impact resistance
- Hygienic: food safe, easy to clean, seamless installation
- Long-lasting: resistant to fading
- Lightweight: easy to lift and install
What is the difference between Perspex and acrylic?
Perspex is a brand of acrylic. Acrylic is a thermoplastic known as polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), first invented in 1933. Other brands include Plexiglas®, Acrylite®, Altuglas®, and Lucite Plazcryl®.
Why should I use acrylic instead of glass?
- Half the weight and 10× stronger than glass
- Better insulation and optical clarity
- Higher impact resistance
- Easier to fabricate and polish
- Environmentally efficient and safer

Protective Films
All plastic sheet products will have a Clear, Blue or White protective film on both sides or a combination of all three. This is to protect during transit and needs removing before usage. Sometimes it can be difficult to peel off but use a thumbnail gently on any corner to lift and peel. Alternatively gently wet any corner with a cloth to separate film and peel.
Adhesives & Sealants
When using any adhesives or sealants with your plastic sheet product great care must be taken in ensuring its compatibility. Some products can react adversely and either not bond/seal properly or would cause the acrylic to cloud or become white at the bond line. Refer to our web pages for advice if unsure. Check your sealant/adhesives ‘use by date’ to ensure its still current for best performance in your project.
