Premium MDF

Find our range of premium MDF boards and sheets online and order your exact size and requirements to be delivered straight to your door. MDF (also known as medium density fibreboard) is extremely versatile and an excellent replacement for solid wood. Unlike wood, MDF is completely smooth and knot free, designed to be non-warping. This means it can fit into most of your DIY projects and is often a cheaper alternative to wood.

We cut MDF panelling to size and offer a full cutting and edging service on all of our MDF sheets online. If you would like your MDF cut to size, please put your required measurements into our cutting tool.

When it comes to using MDF, the possibilities are endless. You can use premium MDF for wall panelling, building furniture, skirting boards – in fact, most DIY projects that would require wood can be substituted with cheaper MDF boards.

Premium MDF is tough too, and ours comes in a range of sizes and thickness. Use our cut to size MDF tool and we will get it ready to send straight to your door – it couldn’t be easier!

The advantages of MDF boards?

There are plenty of advantages to MDF. Firstly, it is a cheaper alternative to natural wood, helping you stick to a budget without budging on quality.

Next, because it’s technically engineered wood, MDF is harder to crack, making it an excellent choice for humid rooms. In fact, we even stock moisture resistant MDF cut to size here for an even tougher finish. Over time natural wood has a tendency to crack and swell, whilst MDF will last longer.

MDF is also easier to paint and seal. Though it still needs priming, as MDF has a smooth surface, its easier to paint over without worrying about any knots or grain.

What is MDF?

MDF is medium density fibreboard and it is an engineered wood-based sheet. MDF is made by bonding together wood fibres with a synthetic resin adhesive. This makes it extremely versatile and smoother than regular wood.

What are the disadvantages of MDF?

We like to consider ourselves unbiased, so there are some occasions where you would be better off with solid wood rather than MDF. The main disadvantage of MDF is that it cannot provide the same strength as that of natural wood, and will break if put under extreme stress. This means heavy duty shelving should be made with solid wood rather than MDF.

Storage

Whilst every effort is made to ensure your wood products arrive in pristine condition care must be taken on delivery to ensure your products are not damaged and to keep them wrapped until needed in a cool, dry place. We sell MDF, Plywood and OSB which have varying degree of manufacturing treatments including flame and moisture resistance. Whilst these products are resilient, they mustn’t be stored or used outside as the elements would delaminate and perish your item especially if they get wet or affected by frost. Some treated wood products are water resistant, not waterproof.

Adhesives & Sealants

When using any adhesives or sealants with your wood sheet product great care must be taken in ensuring its compatibility. Some products can react adversely and either not bond/seal properly or create a poor finish which isn’t good if its going to be visible. Refer to our web pages for advice if unsure. Check your sealant/adhesives ‘use by date’ to ensure its still current for best performance in your project.

Delivery Damages

You have 14 days from receiving your order to report any visible damages. Please email a photograph of the damage along with your order number and contact details as soon as possible to service@theplasticpeople.co.uk. We'll arrange a refund or replacement for you as soon as we receive this. Please keep your packaging and do not use the damaged goods, so they can be collected and returned to us if necessary.
