What is Marine Plywood?
Marine plywood (marine ply) is a plywood particularly well suited for wet or humid areas, and is considered to be the best plywood for outdoor applications. Our marine grade plywood is manufactured using durable face and core veneers. Designed to have minimal defects, our marine plywood sheets resist both delamination and fungal attack. This material is especially suited for use in the ship and boat building industries.
Marine Plywood Cut-To-Size
Each sheet of marine plywood can be cut to any custom size or shape. This saves you the hassle of having to trim the piece down yourself.
Marine Plywood Thickness
As with our other plywood and MDF products, our marine plywood sheets are available in a range of thicknesses. These include: 6mm, 9mm, 12mm, 18mm.
When choosing your marine plywood thickness, consider how the material is going to be used in your project. Thicker sheets are more robust and will have stronger load-bearing capabilities, while thinner sheets are lightweight and better suited for facings.
Marine Plywood FAQs
What is the difference between marine plywood and exterior plywood?
Both marine plywood and exterior hardwood are robust materials suited for outdoor use, harsh weather, and damp. The key difference between marine and exterior plywood is the material used. Marine plywood must adhere to stricter standards than other types of plywood. This applies to both the glue and the wood used in its manufacture. Marine grade plywood is manufactured using more permanent and weather-resistant glues than other types of plywood. The wood used for marine plywood sheets must be defect-free, high-density hardwood.
The lack of defects ensures a smooth surface that will be more water resistant and hardwearing. Other types of plywood have looser restrictions on wood type. All of these differences mean that marine grade plywood is the most robust and water-resistant option on the market.
How Long Does Marine Plywood Last?
Marine plywood can last anywhere between 15-25 years depending on the application, quality, and exposure. When using marine grade plywood in your projects, ensure that you follow all recommended instructions of installing and sealing to ensure maximum longevity.
How Strong Is Marine Plywood?
Marine plywood is stronger than other types of plywood and will maintain its strength if it gets damp.
Is Marine Plywood Waterproof?
Marine plywood is water resistant, but not waterproof. While it might be made with waterproof glues, the wood itself does not undergo any special treatments. As a result, marine plywood is not truly waterproof.
Frequently Asked Questions about Marine Grade Plywood
What are the disadvantages of marine grade plywood?
The waterproof plywood adhesive and high-quality materials used in its construction contribute to its increased price. Another consideration is the weight of marine plywood. Due to its multiple thin layers and denser construction, marine plywood is heavier than regular plywood.
What is marine grade plywood?
Marine plywood is a high-quality plywood built for structural integrity and is best known for its use in environments where it is exposed to moisture for long periods. It is manufactured from durable face and core veneers and contains limited defects, making it extremely resistant to delaminating and fungus, and long-lasting in humid and wet conditions.
What is marine grade plywood ideal for?
Marine-grade plywood can be used as waterproof flooring and plywood cladding for spas and gyms. One of the most common uses is boat building, where it is used for parts such as the hull due to its excellent pliability and water-resistant properties.

Storage
Whilst every effort is made to ensure your wood products arrive in pristine condition care must be taken on delivery to ensure your products are not damaged and to keep them wrapped until needed in a cool, dry place. We sell MDF, Plywood and OSB which have varying degree of manufacturing treatments including flame and moisture resistance. Whilst these products are resilient, they mustn’t be stored or used outside as the elements would delaminate and perish your item especially if they get wet or affected by frost. Some treated wood products are water resistant, not waterproof.
Adhesives & Sealants
When using any adhesives or sealants with your wood sheet product great care must be taken in ensuring its compatibility. Some products can react adversely and either not bond/seal properly or create a poor finish which isn’t good if its going to be visible. Refer to our web pages for advice if unsure. Check your sealant/adhesives ‘use by date’ to ensure its still current for best performance in your project.
