Standout characteristics of our cut to size acrylic block
Wherever you put it, it will always have a strong level of light transmission. But, besides optical clarity, our crystal clear acrylic blocks have a number of standout characteristics.
An acrylic block purchased from The Plastic People benefits from a high gloss surface, which – although extremely hard-wearing in nature – you’ll find that it’s still easy to form or bend this type of plastic.
It’s also weather-resistant. This makes it great for a variety of outdoor purposes. The material is strong enough to take on whatever the elements throw at it and still maintain its clarity and high-gloss finish.
Although a clear acrylic block might sound heavy – they’re actually extremely lightweight and easy to carry around, which again – makes them a great alternative to glass (especially when it comes to glazing).
Having the option to purchase clear acrylic blocks across a range of thicknesses, as well as having the freedom to cut to size to create your own bespoke order, is something our customers value highly.
Acrylic Block Applications
Clear acrylic blocks have a range of purposes across the home and garden – as well as retail displays and merchandising.
Clear acrylic blocks are also prevalent in signage and shelving. You might even explore slightly less dense acrylic blocks for secondary glazing panels – although if you’d rather a thinner alternative then you can also purchase thin acrylic sheets cut to size here.
How to look after your clear acrylic block
Use warm water with a small amount of mild detergent and a soft cotton cloth to clean an acrylic block.
Alternatively, you can use the acrylic cleaner VuPlex which polishes acrylic blocks to a high shine in seconds. Keep your acrylic block looking like brand new by adding VuPlex acrylic cleaner to your order.

Acrylic FAQs
Can acrylic be used in bathrooms?
Yes — acrylic is suitable for bathroom splashbacks, shower splashbacks, and bath panels, especially routed panels machined to specification.
Acrylic can be delivered at a maximum size of 3m × 2m, allowing coverage of large areas without seams (no grouting required). Its light weight makes lifting and fixing to walls a straightforward DIY task. See our acrylic splashbacks pages for more details.
How should I clean acrylic?
Clean acrylic with warm soapy water and a soft cotton cloth. Avoid chemical cleaners, which may damage the surface. For extra polish and protection, our specialist acrylic cleaner Vuplex restores shine, protects against scratches, and removes fine scratches and grime.
Is acrylic better than glass?
Acrylic is 17 times stronger than glass and about half the weight, making it easier to lift, carry, hang, and transport. If dropped, acrylic is less likely to break, and if it does, it breaks into large, blunt pieces rather than sharp shards, making it safer.
Acrylic is also clearer than glass and transmits more light, providing excellent optical performance.
Is acrylic heat resistant?
Yes — acrylic is heat resistant up to 70 °C.
Is acrylic suitable for outdoor use?
Yes — acrylic can be used outdoors.
Is clear acrylic suitable for secondary glazing?
Yes — acrylic is a good choice for secondary glazing. Benefits include increased thermal and sound insulation and extra security. Acrylic’s light weight and flexibility make it easy to install yourself, and its high light transmittance ensures minimal reduction in natural light.
For extra security, consider polycarbonate sheeting, which is roughly 30 times stronger than acrylic and also ideal for secondary glazing.
What is the difference between Perspex and acrylic?
Perspex is a brand of acrylic. Acrylic, or polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), is a common thermoplastic invented in 1933. It became commercially available under trademarks including Perspex®, Plexiglas®, Acrylite®, Altuglas®, and Lucite Plazcryl®.

Protective Films
All plastic sheet products will have a Clear, Blue or White protective film on both sides or a combination of all three. This is to protect during transit and needs removing before usage. Sometimes it can be difficult to peel off but use a thumbnail gently on any corner to lift and peel. Alternatively gently wet any corner with a cloth to separate film and peel.
Adhesives & Sealants
When using any adhesives or sealants with your plastic sheet product great care must be taken in ensuring its compatibility. Some products can react adversely and either not bond/seal properly or would cause the acrylic to cloud or become white at the bond line. Refer to our web pages for advice if unsure. Check your sealant/adhesives ‘use by date’ to ensure its still current for best performance in your project.
