Kitchens are the hot-spot for most of the action - and mess - in our homes. If you are looking to make a practical change without the expense normally associated with kitchen redesign you can easily protect your walls and inject some colour or texture yourself with a made to measure acrylic splashback. Step by Step Step 1 - Check your walls Ideally your walls will be flat and clean (of any flaking paint, tiles, adhesive, dust and dirt) and flat. If your wall has been replastered or you are fixing on to plasterboard you will need to seal the surface first or your acrylic splashback won’t adhere properly. That’s because the plaster will be porous and will suck the moisture from the adhesive. Brushing your wall with a watered down PVA solution and leaving to dryshould do the job. Step 2 - Test Place Your Acrylic Splashback Turn off the electrical supply to the wall you are fixing your splashback to. Then, remove anything that is in the way, eg) socket faceplates. Take your acrylic splashback (it should be very light and easy to handle) and check it fits into position nicely. Step 3 - Fix Your Splashback To The Wall Apply Strong Stuff adhesive evenly across the entire clean, reverse side of your splashback. Lift your splashback and position its base exactly where it needs to be but keep the rest from the wall at about a 45° angle for a moment. Have a helper firmly push the acrylic splashback into the wall from the bottom, working upwards keeping pressure until the adhesive has cured enough to keep your splashback in place – so it neither falls or creeps from your wall. This is a good time to screw socket faceplates back on as they will help to hold your splashback in place as well. It should take around 24 hours to cure properly so hang on until then to remove the protective film from your acrylic splashback. Step 4 - Finish Off With Coloured Silicone Apply a neutral cure silicone sealer to seal along where your worktops meet your splashback. This is to stop any possible moisture penetrating and running down the back of your worktop and units which might cause damp.
