What is OSB?

OSB stands for Oriented Strand Board. It is a type of engineered wood panel made from strands of wood that are oriented in specific directions and bonded together with adhesives, under high heat and pressure. Key features of OSB include:

  • Construction methods - OSB is made by layering strands of wood in specific orientations. This arrangement provides strength and stability to the panel.
  • Strength - OSB is known for its strength and stability, making it suitable for various structural applications in construction.
  • Cost-Effective - OSB is generally more affordable than other types of engineered wood panels, such as plywood.
  • Versatility - OSB comes in various grades and thicknesses, allowing for versatility in different applications. It can be used in both interior and exterior settings (dependent on the specific grade, and treatment)
  • Environmental Considerations - OSB is often considered environmentally friendly because it is made from fast-growing, sustainable wood species and utilises wood strands that would otherwise be wasted in the process.

How long does OSB last?

The lifespan of OSB can vary depending on several factors, including the quality of the OSB, the environmental conditions it's exposed to, and how well it's maintained. Generally, OSB is known to have a relatively long lifespan when used appropriately in construction projects. Properly installed and maintained OSB can last for many years, often comparable to or even exceeding the lifespan of traditional plywood.

Is OSB board waterproof?

OSB is not fully waterproof, but it does have some degree of moisture resistance. Here’s how you can improve the moisture resistance of your OSB board:

  • Moisture/water resistant OSB grades are available, which are treated with either additives or special coatings to improve their ability to withstand moisture, though this will not make them fully waterproof.
  • Subsequently, you can apply waterproofing coatings and membranes to enhance the moisture resistance of the board.
  • Proper maintenance and installation - it’s crucial to correctly install OSB when it comes to waterproofing, particularly if it is likely to be exposed to moisture. This can include sealing edges and joints to prevent water ingress as well as maintaining adequate drainage and ventilation to minimise moisture buildup.
